Xselena was born in Lake Jackson, Texas on April 16, 1971 to Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcella Quintanilla. She began singing with her family's band, Selena y Los Dinos, at a young age. The band performed in local venues and weddings to earn money for the family. Selena was a devout Jehovah's Witness and her religion played an important part in her life.
Selena became a Tejano star in 1989 when she signed with EMI Latin. She worked with her producer Pete Astudillo on many of her hits including 'como la flor', 'amor prohibido' and 'no me queda mas'. Selena died in 1995 when she was 24 years old. Her posthumous release, 'Dreaming Of You,' was a huge success and dominated Billboard charts for several weeks.
Outside of her musical career, Selena was an advocate for AIDS patients and helped many people in her community through various charities. She encouraged minorities in her community to work hard and stay in school to achieve their goals. In 2017, Selena was posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The following year, a museum opened in Corpus Christi dedicated to her memory.
