Grant Nairn, a civil engineer student, enlisted on 24 August 1915 in Camp Sewell (Manitoba) as a civil engineering cadet. His next of kin was given as his father Robert Nairn in Kenora and by the time he went overseas Grant had married Dora Hodgson who was found on the 1930 US census living in Hawthorne, Mineral, Nevada working as an administrative clerk. Their son Alfred Tennyson was also found on the census. Grant left for England on the Scandinavian early in November of that same year. By January of 1916, he was posted to the Canadian Engineers Training Depot at Shorncliffe. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in April and then transferred the 46th Battalion to France. He was invalided back to the UK in early November of that year suffering from a contusion to his head and a foot injury.
