Katara was born in Wolf Cove to Kya and Hakoda in the Southern Water Tribe and raised by her grandmother Gran-Gran. She could also use bloodbending, a technique that allows her to manipulate a person's inner fluids leaving them uncontrolled and unable to fight back.
As a teenager, Katara took on a motherly attitude towards her inner circle of friends which would eventually include her brother Sokka and Avatar Aang. Despite the occasional squabble (which usually escalates into full-blown element-bending cat fights) she always has their best interests at heart.
