Johnkotze is both a stripchat cam and a rugby player for the Maties' first XV. He plays as a centre or on the wing. He has also played for Western Province in the 2014 Varsity Cup.
The name Kotze is derived from the Dutch word blanket. The coat of arms depicts a full-figured man wearing a blanket. It is an old family name, having been carried by the first settlers of what became the Netherlands in the early 16th century.
Gerhardus Petrus Kotzee originally of Graaff-Reinet was the founding father of several branches of this family in the Hoopstad and Winburg district. He settled on "Kareeboomfontein" in about 1840 and died there in 1875. He was remembered as an explorer, often seen with a magnifying lens walking around the farm and making "discoveries". He also took part in mineral schemes and discovered a diamond-bearing fault on Taaibosch close to his homestead.
He was a member of the legislative councils of both the Transvaal Republic and South Africa, and acted as Attorney-General of Southern Rhodesia in 1900. He was the Judge President of the High Court of the Cape of Good Hope when the South African War broke out in 1899. He later sat as a judge on the Appeal Court. Johannes, his son, was killed during the war.
