Meet Jahnavi Rao, Arts & Entertainment Editor of the Tribune
Tanvi joined The Tribune to improve her writing skills and get out of her comfort zone. She is the Arts & Entertainment Editor, but she wants to branch out into multimedia stories in future! She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Psychology, and loves to learn new things. Her favorite part of working on the Tribune is being able to connect with an amazing community. She also likes reading, making smoothies, and Trader Joe's.
Initially, she wanted to pursue medicine. When she began to inquire about Indian medical colleges, her age became a barrier. Being a foreign citizen and over 30 years of age, she needed to be granted permission from the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences before she could take any entrance exams.
Jahnavi started her journey in the world of higher learning with a can-do attitude and a sense for ambition. She has held a leadership position on campus in the Ghungroo and music directed a Harvard Lowkeys show. She is also an active member of Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum. She is also the president and founder of New Voters, a 501(c)3 organization that empowers high school students to civically engage their peers.
At the same time, she juggled family responsibilities and her own entrepreneurial venture in the defense/electronics space, while managing her autoimmune disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, which manifests with sporadic flare-ups. She made many personal sacrifices, including forgoing extended vacations with her husband and limiting her sleeping hours during exam periods.
