The Beast is a recurring character in the Kingdom Hearts series and appears in both the prequel and sequel. He is close to Belle and is one of her closest allies in the story. He is a Beast who has been transformed into an intelligent human. His past experiences led him to develop a bitter outlook on life, causing him to act irrationally and selfishly towards others. However, he also shows his compassionate side and empathizes with others. He cares deeply for Belle, and is able to express his feelings, which is rare for him.
This 13-issue comic series took place somewhere between Belle's imprisonment at the castle and its curse being lifted in the original film. It features a new design for the Beast, who is not an anthropomorphic lion but more like a chimera, combining features from many different animals. Keane was influenced by many animals when he designed the Beast. These included the head structure and horns of an antelope, shoulders and arms of a bear and eyebrows of a Gorilla.
When enraged, he can lift and carry Maurice or Gaston and smash oak furniture into splinters. He can also climb up and down the castle walls with ease, and his razor-sharp claws are able to rip through thick rugs and curtains, as well as shred books. He also has a keen sense of smell and is able to detect traces of food from miles away.
