Alice worked as a civil litigation lawyer in the United States before joining Sullivan. She specialized in personal injury and medical negligence cases. She has written chapters for a number books on design and modern culture, including the acclaimed biographies of designer Yves Saint Laurent, and Hello World: Where Design Meets Life. Hans Ulrich Obrist described her contributions as "panoramic and passionately argued".
Alice has taught creative writing at Stanford University and San Francisco State University and is the co-author of a series of writing textbooks published by W.W. Norton, including Write Yourself Out of a Corner: 100 Generative Writing Exercises for Fiction and Poetry. She is also a founding member of the OECD's Future of Democracy Network and a supporter of human rights advocacy organization Liberty. Previously, she was a member of the board of trustees of the Hepworth Wakefield museum in Yorkshire, Chisenhale Gallery in London and Michael Clark Company, the contemporary dance group.
